Understanding my 5-Star Review System

Hello! And welcome back after such a long break.

Today I will be discussing my tried and true rating system. This is what works for me and is not something anyone should take personally.

I rate the media I consume from 1-5 and sometimes the rating may not make sense to those who only rate from good to bad. I also do not do half stars because that feels like a cop out of commitment. Let’s get started:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I generally liked this! I want to read/watch/listen to it again whether because I enjoyed it so much or because I want to find a deeper understanding of it with a second go-round. This is also the rating that denotes if I think something is worth recommending.

Example) Legally Blonde (the movie), The Hobbit (the book), and Rogue One

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I personally enjoyed this! Work by this creator is something I will be looking up. While I may not go out of my way to recommend this to anyone, I will praise it to anyone who mentions it or wants something like it.

Example) The Hobbit (the animated film) and Ninth House

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was fine. I neither liked nor disliked it. It just existed in my life for the time I allowed it to take up space. Others will enjoy it and I will be happy it worked out for them.

Example) Twilight (the books and movies)

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This isn’t my cup of tea. Maybe the writing wasn’t very good or I felt like something was lacking. Perhaps it is a topic I actively do not enjoy.

Example) Legally Blonde (the musical) and The House in the Cerulean Sea

Rating: 1 out of 5.

This was bad. Like, actually bad. Like why did anyone put their time/effort into this? Why did I waste my time on it? I sure hope I didn’t spend money on it and I will actively point out that it is not worth it to anyone who asks. While not all DNF’s will fall under this category, you can bet a fair amount will.

Example) Legally Blonde (the book), Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Magicians (the book)
